During the initial intake session, all my clients will be asked about any scars or surgeries they may have had.
On a physical level, scar tissue form adhesions (tight areas) on the skin and deeper layers of your fascia. This can cause pain and reduced range of movement, sometimes in seemingly unrelated areas.
On a psychological level, scar tissue can be associated with emotions, particularly those related to the trauma at the time (e.g. the experience at the hospital, the accident or cause of injury, etc).
In my experience, scar tissue release can help the client experience temporary and lasting relief, and restore range of movement.
Back in 2019, I underwent Breast Reduction surgery. At the time I was relatively young and did not treat my scars with the proper attention and care. I also did not allow for the proper time of healing post-surgery and went back to my everyday living and training. I’d say about 8 months after surgery, I started to experience central but localized chest discomfort. Luckily, I was working in an outpatient Physical Therapy clinic and was able to connect with a massage therapist who I trusted to work on my scars. This was the first time I had ever received treatment post-surgery. Although it helped slightly, it wasn’t enough progress for “young me” to prioritize. I simply stopped going and went on my way.
Here I was, over 3 years later in Arizona attending my FST Level 3 training. I had been experiencing severe chest pain for over 6 months now when we moved into the Myofascial sternum release part of class. I experienced a lot of relief with this, but I knew deep down there was more. Then I met Erica. She offered to do a short scar-release session on me during our lunch break.
I barely knew her, but what I did know was that I felt comfortable. Being an empath, I felt her energy if you will. It was safe. It was intentional. And I knew this could be a powerful and healing session for me. She started by making sure I was comfortable first, then went on to assess which spots felt the most “hot/cold or tense.” I didn’t have to say anything, she knew where to go.
She followed my scars and listened to what my body was telling her. We stretched into deep spiral nets of the Fascia. Exactly where I was “caught-up.” And as we maneuvered around the scars, I felt intense emotions arise where I had been storing not just trauma from my surgery but my life.
It was by no surprise to me that I had been holding so much pain there. Your chest/heart is already a vulnerable place, but having a surgical procedure around there makes it even more.
Erica eased into a good stopping point when she felt my body say, “You’re done today.” Unfortunately we had to get back to class right after, and I didn’t have time to process and work through what I needed right away. However, the next morning I attended a Somatic Breathwork release class and it all came out!
I firmly believe Erica assisted in this release by breaking up the adhesions I had in and around my scars the day prior!
She opened up a part of me I had been suppressing!
Her touch combined with her intuition and ability to provide a SAFE space is SO special.
If you or someone you know has scars (from any walk of life), reach out to Erica to assist in that release.
You will walk away feeling much lighter and happier.
I will forever thank her for being a part of my healing process!
